Tammy Faye Starlite - Used Country Female CD - AUDIO ONLY

Source: Billboard Magazine
Originally Reviewed: March 08, 2003 "Tammy Faye Starlite has become a notorious New York performance artist because of an overwhelmingly salacious and biased, born-again Christian country rock'n'roll act that is either just blasphemous or hysterically blasphemous depending on one's sense of humor. But whereas music takes second place to shtick at her live gigs, her new disc, on bold Brooklyn, N.Y., indie Diesel Only, works surprisingly well, thanks largely to veteran producer Eric "Roscoe" Ambel's Americana touch. Of course, you can't go wrong with covers like Cheap Trick's "Surrender"—featuring Starlite's revised lyrics—or Marshall Chapman's telling "Don't Make Me Pregnant." But originals like the rollicking rocker "(I've Got) Jesus Looking Out for Me" are also worthy.—JB"

The self-described "lovechild of Loretta Lynn and Lenny Bruce," Starlite is the creation of native New York City comic actress and performance artist Tammy Lang, who has earned a fast-growing reputation for her side-splittingly offensive country-gospel-cumpornographic musical "SCHTICK."

Over the past five years, Starlite's satirical brand of musical theater has earned her RAVE REVIEWS from New York’s harshest critics, and attracted sold-out crowds to her outrageous cabaret and club shows. Her latest album, USED COUNTRY FEMALE, is available on Diesel Only Records, the Brooklyn-based home of "RIG ROCK" and urban country trucker culture.

The 12 musical selections on USED COUNTRY FEMALE are designed to confront and offend listeners of all races, creeds, and religions, with titles like "Highway 69" "Don’t Make Me Pregnant," "Misguided Magdalene," and "Ride the Cotton Pony." It also features a cover of the 1974 GLEN CAMPBELL hit "I Knew Jesus (Before He was a Star)" and a rewrite of the CHEAP TRICK rock classic "Surrender," in which the spirit of her savior enters a moaning Starlite. But USED COUNTRY FEMALE is not simply a comedy album, as Starlite has assembled an all-star cast of highly respected players from the world of alternative country music. Produced by STEVE EARLE guitarist ERIC "ROSCOE" AMBEL at Cowboy Technical Services Recording Rig in Brooklyn, the album features such notables as guitarist MARK SPENCER (Kelly Willis, Jay Farrar) and drummer KEN COOMER (Wilco, SWAG), as well as ERIC DRYSDALE, who provides duet vocals on "The Jim Rob Song" and "(I’ve Got) Jesus Looking Out for Me."
